Watercolor classes for the beginner to intermediate Learn to paint in the fun medium of Watercolor Clyde Kirkpatrick's interest in art began at an early age. As a young boy
growing up in Michigan, he frequently had a pencil in hand making drawings
of scenes he would observe as well as scenes he saw in his vivid imagination.
When in high school, he was a member of the Art Club and helped with the
production of sets for the school plays as well as the screen printed posters
advertising the plays. His first sale was a charcoal drawing of a tree that
a teacher purchased, framed and hung in his home. He participated in summer
art workshops sponsored by the Baldwin Library in Birmingham, Michigan.
His talent was often recognized and encouraged by the instructors. While
in college at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan taking music and
business classes, he often sat in on art classes to enhance his natural
artistic talent, which flourished in this environment.
His interest in screen-printing and serigraphy would ultimately give rise to his 22-year career as the owner and operator of Excalibur Enterprises, a commercial screen-printing company in Goleta, California. During this period he developed his art design and layout skills, often generating original concepts and art for customer’s projects. His work was honored by the Santa Barbara Advertising Federation. Artists are known for their observation skills. Clyde’s 15-year involvement with astronomy doing sketching honed these skills. Doing detailed drawings of lunar craters and features on the surface of Mars in mere minutes before the sun angle changed required keen observation, which resulted in many fine illustrations. Clyde’s developed talent for photography plays a large part in the creative process by experiencing the scene through the senses to capture the detail and the position of the light source and shadows. The photographic scenes are sometimes combined to produce watercolors that draw the viewer into the scene. Clyde’s work allows the viewer to experience the full
depth of the scene and to be swept away, exciting the senses that
invoke serenity, joy and fond memories. His watercolor technique
has also been enhanced by the teachings of Don Rankin, Steven
Quiller, Jeanne Dobie, Edgar Paine and Ray Hunter. He has exhibited
for many juried shows for art galleries, museums, businesses,
outside art shows and benefits, winning awards along the way.
